Can Love Improve Your Health?

‘Tis the season for love, and if the heart-shaped candy and heavily-frosted cupcakes in the grocery stores don’t get you in the spirit, perhaps we can help. You probably already realize that when you’re around loved ones you tend to feel better, but did you know that there’s actual data suggesting that loving others is good for your health?

Here are a few ways that loving others, and being loved, can impact your health and wellbeing:

  1. An improved immune system

Those who experience positive, loving relationships tend to have higher levels of white blood cells and antibodies – both of which contribute to a strong immune system. In addition, the oxytocin and dopamine that are released with positive or loving interactions may also strengthen defenses against illness.

On the other side, one study found that people who were socially isolated were 45% more likely to get sick with a common cold. This could partially be explained by the elevated stress levels that can sometimes occur with being alone, which negatively affect the immune system.

  2. A longer life expectancy

Studies show that those with healthy interpersonal relationships tend to live longer. One study in particular, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, takes this notion further to conclude that those who share “fleeting moments when you light up together and experience sudden joy, closeness, and intimacy” can lead to longer and healthier lives.

  3. Lower blood pressure

Those in positive relationships tend to have healthier blood pressure levels, largely thanks to decreased levels of stress. Heart.org reports that couples who feel mutually supported, especially when they hug often, maintain higher oxytocin levels which are associated with lower blood pressure in women.

  4. A positive influence

When you have a person in your life to encourage you, celebrate successes, practice healthy lifestyle choices, and even serve as a sounding board, it can make a huge impact on your overall health. Having someone you can count on can lower stress levels, which helps with sleep quality and combats feelings of depression.

  5. And even pain management!

Surprisingly, feeling and receiving love can positively affect the pain control areas in the brain. Studies show that those in strong relationships report less pain than those in unhappy relationships or those without that strong connection. Medical News Today reports that the simple act of touching a loved one can help reduce pain.

While we’re happy to celebrate the loving connections our patients have, we know that not everyone has someone with whom they share a close connection.
